I don't understand what the point of voting is when the winner goes by electoral votes.

Well the votes you cast decides which party the State delegate has to vote for.

Example:

If the Democrat nomination wins the popular vote in California then the Californian delegates should vote for the Democrats.

The American system is very complex and the Electoral College was first only created so only the rich white men could vote. Very flawed system to as the delegates are not required to vote as the State wishes by law though in my opinion they should be.

If I had my way the US and the UK would follow a system of Proportional representative where the percentage of votes a part gets decide the percentage of seats in Congress/Parliament each party gets.

Could have helped us students in England if that was followed as Labour would've had to join with the Lib Dems meaning no University tuition fees. As it is me and thousands of others are in needless debt.

Also could have been good as n 1994 US Elections I believe Ralph Nader received 19% of the total votes but no electoral college votes. Imagine a Congress where 19% of Congressmen were Independent. America would be a totally different place.
