A DVD player at that time is way different from a Blu-Ray now.
By the time PS2 came out, DVD was an established format, and a MAJOR upgrade from VHS.
HDTV and HD-DVD is not going to make the same impact on the consumer electronics industry as the transfer from VHS to DVD did.
And honestly...I don't know one person who bought a PS2 for the DVD Player only. I mean sure they might've taken it into consideration when buying the system, but out of the 100+ people who own PS2 in my grade(myself included) every person bought it for games.
The problem there is that the PS3 will only appeal to a select group of people in regards of its power. This is because the casual gamer is going to look at the 360, priced at 300/400, and the PS3 to its right priced at 400/500, and he'll think: The games look the same...that one's cheaper...and can play DVDs...the other one has some new thing I don't know anything about...
Or they'll be on a tighter budget and get a Wii.
The people who will want the PS3 for its Blu-Ray are also the techno savy people who own 60" HDTVs and will actually be able to see the HD difference. Only about 15-17% of Americans own an HDTV set.
Either way, only the most informed people who go to gaming forums(such as this) gaming websites, and know a thing or two about technology will understand why Blu-Ray is good in its own respect and is actually a deal when priced at 600$ with the most powerful console Sony has ever built, but those people don't make up the larget part of the consumer market. |

Metal Gear is one of the few reasons left that I want to own a PS3.
Final Fantasy XIII, Metal Gear Solid 4, Devil May Cry 4 and Assassin's Creed were the only 4 games I was interested in from all of the titles Sony has announced.
AC is now coming to 360.
Dead Rising sold so well that Capcom has taken a heavy liking to 360 (Lost Planet is still an exclusive). Due to this, and the fact that rumors have been flying around the net for ages, it's possible to see Devil May Cry 4 on 360. I mean, the whole AC thing started with rumors too, now look what happend.
So whats left for me is MGS4 and FF XIII.
2 Titles =/= $600.
If they do end up being indefinite exclusives for the PS3, I'll probably get it somewhre down the road, but not for at least a year or two. |

If not many people buy the PS3 then those 2 games that you want will probably come over to the 360.
It all depends on how badly you want those 2 games. It's like a boycott, the majority will not buy the PS3 for only 2 games, but there's always going to be those that will who can't live without them. |

| the ps3 will sell for the blue ray player. all the other players are a lot more expensive than the ps3 and you cant play games on a blue ray player (as far as i know.) |

| The name recognition for Sony is a double edged sword. If they are hoping to sell PS3s on the fact that they can advertise them as Blu-Ray players, then they're out of luck. Because PlayStation is known as a game console. (Yes people know that it can play DVDs and all that, but adults looking for a Blu-Ray player won't look in the game section of a store for one.) |
