How well do they work, and is it worth the time to download and emulate?

It depeneds on who made it. Some are very good.

The old 8 Bit and 16 bit consoles have excellent emulators

Well PS2 are much larger downloads than older games but yes you can emulate Ps2 games

yes but not xbox games. the files encryption is quite great. and the size of the file is huge as well.
