Even if Chief is not in it; the plot in Halo Wars alludes to the Halo trilogy. Plus, I don't read books.

Yeah, but Halo 3 is much different; from a fighting standpoint, you've only just met the Convenant, the war isn't a total loss yet, and the Spartans are a fighting force. Oh well.
